Deep Sea fishing in Costa Rica takes on many adventurous forms from pursuing massive marlin to inshore fare like Rooster fish and tunas. Fishing for gigantic Cuberra Snappers is a feat worthy of the most dedicated fisherman. Using relatively standard equipment and this unusual technique, the boats of FishingNosara.com have had incredible results on these beautiful behemoths.

To start, we rig our live bait to the Penn 50W on the outriggers. Each of the baitfish are pulled with a J hook through the head of the fish and a circle hook in the dorsal. The troll should be a brisk 2.5 knots to keep pace with the baitfish.

Be patient for about fourty-five minutes. While you are waiting patiently, eighty feet below those two active baitfish are creating a buffet-sized feeding frenzy. The large Cuberra Snappers will no doubt emerge from their sanctuaries to find out what the frenzy is about.

It’s important to realize that a big Cuberra Snapper is no dummy. A 40lbs. Cuberra is 25 years old, a 60lbs. over 40 years old; they don’t get so old and big by biting on fishing hooks.
